The final seal, line marking and the removal of stockpiled material on the recently reconstructed section of Federal Drive starts this week (from 9 October).

The road was reopened in July 2024, after it was badly damaged during the 2022 floods and now, after several months of settling, contractors will be applying the final seal.

Phil Warner, Byron Shire Council’s Manager of Infrastructure Recovery, said the final seal is a normal part of the road reconstruction process, to ensure longevity of the road.

“People may be wondering why we are sealing the road again so soon after it was reconstructed, but this is really the last step in the rebuilding process,” Mr Warner said.

“It’s common in big road reconstruction projects to ensure the road stays nice and smooth for as long as possible,” Mr Warner said.

Contractors will also be moving a stockpile of material that accumulated as part of the reconstruction of the road.

The work is expected to take around three weeks and it should be finished by late October/early November.

The road will remain open but there will be short delays for drivers.

The project has been funded by the Australian and NSW Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements after the 2022 floods.
