We are now progressing with a detailed design of the intersection of The Esplanade and The Strand Avenue.

In March and April 2024, we asked for feedback on increasing parking capacity in the following areas:

  • The Esplanade south
  • Ocean Avenue
  • Park Street
  • North Head Road carpark.

Following a Council report in August 2024, we are now progressing with a detailed design of the intersection of The Esplanade and The Strand Avenue.

What we heard

During the consultation we collected feedback via:

  • Information sessions at the New Brighton market and with local residents.
  • Online survey
  • Call and emails.

We heard from 268 people during the consultation.

The response to the three parking proposals was mixed, with many additional comments and a significant amount of feedback requesting:

  • drainage improvements
  • construction of footpaths and cycleways
  • protection of the natural habitat and village feel of New Brighton.

What was the outcome?

Following a report to Council on the 15 August 2024, we are progressing with a detailed design of the intersection of The Esplanade and The Strand Avenue. This includes:

  • a re-prioritisation of the intersection
  • installing way finding signage across New Brighton and South Golden Beach to direct visitors to existing parking and beach access.

Council decided to pause any further parking investigations until the Place Plan for the Ocean Shores area has been completed.

Parking challenges in New Brighton

Creating more parking near beach areas is not possible for several reasons:

  • Lack of public space.
  • Narrow roads and housing developments not designed to cater for beachgoers and large numbers of visitors.
  • Sensitive beach (dune) and bush environments.
