It is storm season, and the recent wet weather is an opportunity to inform people about the 11 local community resilience hub (CHUBs) that are active across the Byron Shire.

The CHUB volunteer teams are a part of the Byron Shire Community Resilience Network, coordinating with other local organisations, government agencies and emergency services to support the community with preparedness before an emergency and then during the recovery process.

CHUB volunteers are active in:

  • Main Arm
  • South Golden Beach, New Brighton, Ocean Shores
  • Wilsons Creek, Huonbrook, Wanganui
  • Federal, Goonengerry, Eureka
  • Mullumbimby
  • Bangalow
  • Minyon (Upper Coopers Creek)
  • Broken Head
  • Suffolk Park
  • Coorabell

“The aim of the CHUBS groups is to strengthen the overall resilience of the Byron Shire by making the community better prepared and connected in localised pockets, and therefore more equipped to face future challenges,” Byron Shire Mayor, Sarah Ndiaye, said.

“Since the 2022 floods the amazing volunteers in these groups have been planning, training, and building their capacity with the support of Council, emergency services, Plan C and the Australian Red Cross,” Mayor Ndiaye said.

People interested in joining, connecting with or starting a local CHUB should contact Sarah Boulle from Council at council@byron.nsw.gov.au
