Mark your calendars Byron Shire residents!  Council is once again doing extra wheelie bin collections for two weeks over the Christmas/new year period.

The additional collections will run from Monday 23 December to Friday 3 January.

For these two weeks Council will be collecting all wheelie bins – so people should put all three out (red, yellow and green) in urban areas (red and yellow) in rural areas for emptying on their normal bin days.

Sarah Child, Council’s Strategy and Engagement Officer, said the additional collection service was always well-received by residents.

“We understand that the holiday season generates extra waste and rather than see bins overflowing and rubbish spilling onto the streets, polluting neighbourhoods, bush and waterways, we offer these additional services,” Ms Child said.

“This does come at a cost to Council of approximately $40,000 but if this means we can recycle and dispose of green waste correctly then that’s a good outcome for the community and the environment.

“However, increasing waste is not sustainable for our future so what we really want to see are people making a pledge to themselves this holiday season to reduce waste as much as possible…it’s easy and cheap,” she said

Ideas include:

  • Reducing food waste - buy what you need, don’t over-cater and freeze leftovers.
  • Replace plastic decorations - try reusable decorations, make your own, use what you have (branches, material, lights)
  • Avoid single-use serve ware - use the dishes you have, hire or share dishes, bring a plate (literally)

People should put all their bins out the night before the normal collection day and take them in again, as soon as possible after they are emptied.
