There was a full house for the first meeting of Byron Shire’s new council today with family, friends and community members filling the gallery for the occasion.

Mayor Ndiaye, Councillor Janet Swain and members of Big Song Choir joined in singing ‘The Bridge’ to celebrate the start of the new term.

“Taking the Affirmation of Office today in front of our families and friends was a very emotional, significant experience for me and I imagine for my colleagues as well,” Mayor Ndiaye said.

“There was great feeling in the chambers and I know we are all very honoured to be given this privilege by our community - it is not something we take on lightly,” she said.

Councillor Jack Dods was elected to the position of Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months.

Cr Elia Hauge and Cr Ndiaye were appointed to Rous County Council.

The next meeting of Council will be held on 24 October.
