Gulgan Road works start on Sunday – take note of detours
Published on 17 October 2024
Council will be temporarily closing parts of Gulgan Road at Mullumbimby on Sunday 20 October, Monday 21 October and Tuesday 22 October between 8am to 4pm, to do essential road resealing work, as part of Council’s general maintenance program.
These works were scheduled for earlier this year but had to be delayed due to wet weather.
Parts of Gulgan Road will be closed between 8am to 4pm as follows:
- Sunday 20 October: at the Gulgan Road/Mullumbimby Road intersection (near Uncle Tom’s Pies) work will be done under traffic control. Expect short delays.
- Monday 21 October: the Southern end (between Uncle Tom’s Pies to the Tyagarah roundabout) will be closed. Please note: Traffic will need to detour via the M1 and the northern end of Gulgan Road.
- Tuesday 22 October: the Northern end (between Uncle Tom’s Pies to the Brunswick Heads roundabout) will be closed. Please note: Traffic will need to detour via the M1 and the southern end of Gulgan Road.
Phil Holloway, Byron Shire Council’s Director of Infrastructure Services said that closing the road in sections would allow these important maintenance jobs to be completed quickly and safely.
“We need to close this road in sections to enable us to get this work done as efficiently as possible and that does mean that traffic will need to follow temporary detours,” he said.
“I understand this may add about ten to fifteen minutes to people’s journeys, depending on the route they normally take, but these are temporary closures, and we will open the sections of road up as soon as the works are safely completed.
“At Gulgan Road, the roundabouts off the motorway will remain open and there will still be access provided for residents to their properties, as well as emergency services. This will also include people trying to access businesses (e.g. North Coast Veterinary Services) in the work area.
“Importantly, we are also able to let local buses, including school buses through the work sites, bus services might be slightly delayed, but they will still be able to pick up passengers on Gulgan Road.
“Otherwise, people should follow signage and detour routes (pictured below) while we get these improvements done.
“To assist us, we ask that people limit their travel near the area if possible and that they not park on Gulgan Road.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused as we improve the condition of this critical road,” he said.
VMS Boards will be in place and residents and businesses have been notified. Short delays should be expected while the work is completed.
Byron Shire’s main roads are resealed to keep them in as good a condition as possible. People can request road grading, resealing and pothole repair by going to Council’s Report It platform.
