Burringbar Street stretches for 250 metres and is the hub of the town’s central business district with cafes, restaurants, shops, and hotels gracing both sides of the street.

In September 2023 Council asked people in Mullumbimby what they would like the main street to look like.

Based on feedback Council has developed a draft concept design for an upgrade of the street, and staff are checking back in with the community and businesses to see what they think.

Some of the key elements of the draft design are:

  • An increase in footpath width from 3.5-metres to 5.1-metres.
  • Alfresco dining areas in front of some cafes and restaurants.
  • Raised, 10-kilometre/hour shared zones at the intersection of Burringbar and Stuart Streets where people have priority to cross in any direction.
  • Replacement of the existing palm trees with local species that provide better shade.
  • Loss of approximately 10 car parks.

Andrew FitzGibbon, Place Planning Coordinator, said making improvements to the main street was the number one priority identified by community in the Our Mullumbimby Masterplan.

“The draft design aims to support a main street for everyone, a place where people love to come, hang out, shop, meet friends and enjoy themselves,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

“It’s important for everyone to know that this is just a draft document – nothing is set in stone.

“Now is a great time for people to share their views, as this will have a meaningful impact on the final design,” he said.

People are invited to come to a drop-in session at the Council Chambers and to talk to staff about their ideas.

  • Tuesday 5 March, anytime between 3:00pm – 6:00pm
  • Wednesday 6 March, anytime between 7:00am – 10:00am
