An $850,000 upgrade of sections of Heritage Park is almost finished and today community leaders were invited to check out the improvements to the much-loved part of Mullumbimby.

The Byron Shire Council received $500,000 for this project from the Community Assets Program, jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments under the Disaster Recovery Arrangements.

The Community Assets Program is part of the broader Community Local Infrastructure Recovery Package and is aimed at supporting the recovery of local community infrastructure impacted by the severe weather and floods in February 2022.

Byron Shire Council contributed an extra $350,000.

The project included seating and a renewed accessible pathway and boardwalk through the park and along the river, linking the entrance at Brunswick Terrace to the playground at Mill Street.

Plus, Council funded improvements to Heritage Park with new play equipment designed to test the climbing skill of older children, as well as smaller features to stimulate and encourage imaginative and nature-based play.

A section of the park has been closed off and is being turned into an off-lead dog-area.

Byron Shire Mayor, Sarah Ndiaye said Heritage Park is a gem in Mullumbimby and it is wonderful to see kids outside, climbing all over the playground and having bucket-loads of old-fashioned fun.

“On behalf of Council, and residents who told us they wanted these improvements, I am very grateful to the Australian and NSW Governments for providing the funding for this important community project,” Mayor Ndiaye said.

Federal Member for Richmond, Justine Elliot said as your local MP I’m proud to have delivered $500,000 in joint funding from the Federal and NSW Governments towards improving Mullumbimby Heritage Park.

“Restoring the accessible path in Mullumbimby Heritage Park ensures that everyone, including people with disabilities, parents with prams, and seniors, can fully enjoy this valuable public space. It creates an inclusive environment where no one is left out.”

“This project not only enhances the park’s accessibility but also includes new play equipment, making Heritage Park an even more beloved destination for our community.”
