Byron Shire Council is set to upgrade the stormwater system at the corner of Station Street and Fern Street in Mullumbimby in 2025, aiming to reduce flash flooding in the area.

Work will start in mid-January and will require a temporary full road closure at the intersection of Station Street and Fern Street for approximately one month.

Temporary traffic controls will then be in place for the remainder of the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of July 2025.

Council’s Project Manager, Tom Coulthurst, said the much-needed upgrade will address flooding in this part of Mullumbimby.

“The current drainage system will be replaced with a new, higher-capacity stormwater system that will significantly reduce flooding along Station Street and Fern Street,” Mr Coulthurst said.

“To carry out this work, we’ll need to close the road at the Fern Street and Station Street intersection for about four weeks and traffic control will be in place to manage the detours for traffic and pedestrians.

“While we understand this may cause inconvenience, we’re working closely with nearby residents, businesses and community services to minimise the impacts.

“Wherever possible, we’re scheduling work requiring road closures during the school holidays to reduce disruption,” Mr Coulthurst said.

This project is funded by the Australian Government through its Roads to Recovery program, the NSW Government and Council.

Future improvements to Station Street, including footpath, kerb and gutter, and pavement works, are currently unfunded. Council is actively seeking additional funding and hopes to undertake these works in 2025 or 2026 if funding becomes available.
