Three Byron Shire-based creative projects will share in $15k funding under Council’s Creative Public Spaces Small Grants program for 2024.

The three recipients include Public Palace ($5,000), The Returning in collaboration with Arts Northern Rivers ($5000) and Bruns Riverkeepers Alliance auspiced by Mullum Seed ($5,000).

“This year, with the support of the Arts and Creative Industries Advisory Committee, the funding pool increased by $10,000 allowing us to fund a total of three creative projects,” Council’s Arts and Culture Officer, Melitta Firth said.

"This is a fantastic outcome for the artists and the wider community because it means we can deliver even more diverse and creative projects in our public spaces,” Ms Firth said.

"We're excited to see how the artists will transform everyday spaces around the Byron Shire into vibrant and engaging experiences," she said.

Byron Shire Council’s Creative Public Spaces Small Grants 2024-2025 recipients include:

Public Palace ($5,000)- Remedial Transmissions (Creative Development Phase)

Funding will support the research and development phase of a site responsive, participatory public artwork in Byron Shire. Artists Grace Dewar and Laurie Oxenford will engage community to develop recordings that will activate selected public spaces using a hidden, sensor-activated audio system.

The Returning in collaboration with Arts Northern Rivers ($5,000)- Bulaan Dalang Galii Naa Gan Ngaa Leen Duu – Mural and Artists Residency

Bulaan Dalang Galii Naa Gan Ngaa Leen Duu is a mentoring program supporting emerging Indigenous creative practitioners. Artists will be mentored over a 12-month period by established artists and cultural leaders through professional learning sessions, time for self-directed artistic exploration and cultural workshops. A mural installation in the Byron CBD will be a public outcome of the project.

Bruns Riverkeepers Alliance auspiced by Mullum Seed ($5,000) - We are all Riverkeepers

This project is a creative showcase about connecting to, caring for and celebrating the Brunswick River. The project will utilise multimedia arts formats including poetry, photography and video, personal biography as well as imagery to document stories of diverse ‘riverkeepers’ of the Bruns River - from Indigenous custodians to artists and creatives, fishers, farmers, boaters, ecologists, bush regenerators, and diverse landowners along the river. The intention is to inspire and link our communities to ways in which they can connect with, care for and celebrate our river.

“The Creative Public Spaces Grant Round opens every year in April for projects completed in the following financial year. If you have a project idea, we encourage you to consider applying next year,” Ms Firth said.

The program offers small grants of up to $5,000 per project, for artworks or creative activations in public spaces in the Byron Shire.
