Parts of the Byron Shire have received more than 65mm rain in the 24 hours to 9am this morning resulting in multiple road closures, particularly in the Mullumbimby and hinterland areas.

The roads hardest hit this morning were Mullumbimby Road, Gulgan Road, Friday Hut Road and Myocum Road which all required road closures and caused issues for people trying to get to and from work and school.

“At present we are aware of many roads that have been impacted or are currently flooding or have water over them and this is a constantly changing situation. We will be closely monitoring the situation over the next few days with the possibility of some localised flooding in Byron Bay tomorrow morning on the high tide,” Council's Acting Director Infrastructure Services, Cameron Clark said.

“We are urging the community to keep an eye on the SES and BOM advice as the saturated catchment means we are seeing an instant response to the rain that is falling,” Mr Clark said.

The community are urged to limit movement across the Shire and, if possible, avoid travel if it is not necessary. Remember, if its flooded, forget it!

People affected by flooding or storms should contact the State Emergency Service (SES) on 132 500 for help.

The SES advises people should:

  • Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
  • Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
  • Keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
  • Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
  • Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
  • Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
  • If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
  • Heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
  • Stay vigilant and monitor conditions.

For problems on roads, including flooding and trees and other obstacles please contact Council on 02 6626 7000. If reports need to be made after hours the emergency number is 02 6622 7022.
