Coogera Creek Detention Basin - re-sized.jpg

We are upgrading the Coogera Circuit Detention Basin to reduce the risk of the basin flooding after big rain events. During the 2022 floods, the basin overflowed which contributed to flooding of properties in Suffolk Park.

The aim of this project is to improve the basin's performance.

This will reduce the risk of properties flooding but will not completely eliminate localised flooding.

Upgrades to the basin were also recommended in the Tallow Creek Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan.

Completed work:

  • Raised the basin wall.
  • Stormwater drainage improvements.
  • Demolition of old stormwater infrastructure.

During construction:

  • The majority of work has been completed, outstanding work will be completed by the end of January, this includes finishing works including placement of bollards and landscaping.
  • Beech Drive swale work will commence in late January and should be completed by late February.
  • There will be temporary traffic control in Bottlebrush Crescent, which will be reduced to one lane traffic at times. Access to residential properties will be provided. There may be moderate construction noise and vibration at times.
  • Work hours will be 7:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday, and 7:00am to 1:00pm on Saturday. No work will be undertaken on Sundays or public holidays.

The Coogera Detention Basin Overflow Project has been primarily funded by the Australian Government through the Emergency Response Fund administered by NSW Reconstruction Authority’s NRRRP 2022-23 ($550,000), with funding also from Byron Shire Council ($70,000).
