Water quality of our beaches and waterways

We monitor six swimming sites in the Shire. Water samples are collected weekly from November to February.

Sampling of Byron Shire Council swim sites is influenced by wet weather impacts, with a high proportion of samples collected during and following rainfall.

As a general precaution, swimming at ocean beaches should be avoided:

  • during and for 24 hours after significant rainfall at ocean beaches
  • during and up to three days following heavy rainfall at estuarine beaches,
  • if there are signs of stormwater pollution such as discoloured water or floating debris.
