The Sandhills wetland in Byron Bay is being restored.
An assessment of Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) of Sandhills Stormwater Management System was on public exhibition throughout December, January and closed on 19 February 2024.
At the 28 March 2024 meeting, Council approved the EIS for the wetlands, which is due to be constructed in 2024.
About the Sandhills Wetland
The Sandhills wetland is on the edge of Byron CBD, covering 1.8 hectares. It is bordered by Massinger Street and Lawson Street.
The area was sand mined in the 1930s destroying the natural wetland and a lot of the native vegetation.
Restoring the wetland is one of the most significant environmental projects to be done in Byron Bay in recent years.
